{"id":1,"date":"2008-10-29T18:34:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-29T23:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wheatontech.com\/\/?p=1"},"modified":"2021-03-24T14:22:26","modified_gmt":"2021-03-24T19:22:26","slug":"hello-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wheatontech.com\/index.php\/2008\/10\/29\/hello-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Technology for \u201cus\u201d and RSS Feeds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On Thursday I attended the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.techleaders.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Technology<\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170330055133\/http:\/\/www.techleaders.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Leaders Association<\/a>\u00a0monthly networking meeting.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jimmcgee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jim McGee<\/a>\u00a0spoke about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcgeesmusings.net\/2008\/10\/24\/technology-leaders-association-presentation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Technology for \u201cus\u201d<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of his points was that many new technologies require you to use them before you can understand them.&nbsp; I tend to agree with him, much like you cannot really understand baseball until you play it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A tool that I have found very useful for me, yet I find few friends or co-workers who use it is RSS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>As of today, Wikipedia defines\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RSS_(file_format)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RSS<\/a>\u00a0as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RSS<\/strong>\u00a0is a family of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Web_feed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Web feed<\/a>\u00a0formats used to publish frequently updated works \u2013 such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blog\">blog<\/a>\u00a0entries, news headlines, audio, and video \u2013 in a standardized format.An RSS document (which is called a \u201cfeed\u201d, \u201cweb feed\u201d, or \u201cchannel\u201d) includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I call it a way to simplify how you interact with the web.&nbsp; This is a way to get content, or content summaries, delivered to you without cluttering up your mailbox.&nbsp; Think of it as a newspaper box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I subscribe to many web feeds, some are published daily, weekly, monthly, or only occasionally.&nbsp; Subscribing solves at least two problems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It keeps a list of the publications I like to read on a regular basis.<\/li><li>It tells me when there is something new to read, I don\u2019t have to go to the web page each day to see if there is something new, or, for example, remember to go every Monday to see the latest article.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Confused?&nbsp; Actually, I expected that.&nbsp; This is something that has to be used to be understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are at least two tools\u2013actually there are many tools, but here are two\u2013you can use to subscribe to RSS feeds:\u00a0 A stand alone feed reader like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.feedreader.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FeedReader<\/a>, or my favorite, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/reader\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Reader<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have set up your reader, you can find links on websites for RSS or web feeds.\u00a0 Generally all you need to do is click on the link to begin the subscription.\u00a0 To subscribe to this blog\u2019s RSS feed,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wheatontech.com\/?feed=rss2\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I find the Google Reader my favorite.&nbsp; It is portable, you just need web access to get to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you begin to find more and more RSS feeds, you will find that your reading is organized in one place.&nbsp; You may have to click through to the primary site for the article for many of your feeds, but you knew it was ready to read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few of my favorite feeds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.downloadsquad.com\/rss.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download Squad \u2013 Software Reviews and Tips<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chicagoist.com\/index.rdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chicagoist \u2013 Blog about the Windy City<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.indystar.com\/racingexpert\/index.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Curt Cavin \u2013 IndyCar Blog<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndsmcobserver.com\/articles.rss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Notre Dame Observer Newspaper<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since I use the Google Reader, I could share my favorite feeds with you on a daily basis.&nbsp;
